the program

Meeting in Libreville

Day 1
We will meet you at the international airport of Libreville the day before we start our tour within the country. Your guide will pick you up at the airport on your arrival and will bring you to your hotel. Depending on the time on which you will arrive, a first visit of the Gabonese capital may be organised on short notice.

Stage 1: Discover the traditional side of Gabon.

Day 2
Departure from the capital by 4×4 for a day on the road and the tracks. We cross the line of the equator to go to province of Ngounié, beautiful forest and river region located in central Gabon.

Days 3 & 4
We spend two days in a remote village of farmers-fishermen (Douani), near Sindara. On their side, we invite you to try traditional fishing in the river called N’gounié, we will touch base with the basics of basketry, and to go harvest manioc, pineapples… in order to cook them in accordance with local receipts. A short trip to the emblematic catholic mission “Trois-Epis” and – as the case may be – an attendance to a traditional ceremony, will polish this introduction to the Gabonese traditional way of living. You will remain in cozy and comfortable Safari Tents within an incredibly beautiful natural spot, between forest and river.

Stage 2: On the paths of a Nobel Peace Prize holder

Day 5
We leave for Lambarene where we visit the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, named after its founder. Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1952, Dr. Schweitzer impressed the world by putting tropical deceases in the worldwide medical spotlight. After walking around the city, we will spend a night at the catholic mission “Immaculée Conception”.

Stage 3: On the road to the Atlantic ocean

Days 6 & 7
Our journey continues by the river, with the boat ride from the Ogoué to Port-Gentil. Located 20 minutes by navigation from the economic capital in sober bungalows, nautic activities are now on the agenda: whale-watching excursion (from mid-July to mid-September), ocean or river fishing, kayaking, water skiing, etc. A small wreck near the site will delight snorkelers, while beautiful white sandy beaches will please those who would like to relax walking along the ocean.

Stage 4: the Loango national parc

Day 8
Departure by car to the Loango National Park, an exceptional natural reserve for the diversity of its fauna and flora. Just after your arrival in the hotel, embark on a pirogue and observe Gorillas by learning about rehabilitation of living on a secluded island.

Day 9
For those who would like to experience an encounter with gorillas in their natural environment, a trip can be organized in the morning. Alternatively, a relaxing moment on the ocean shore will be proposed, with oyster picking. Tasting is of course part of the program. In the afternoon, embark on a pirogue again and visit the catholic Mission Sainte-Anne (and learn more about its historic link with the Eiffel Tower), as well as the Mpvié River to observe crocodiles, monkeys and many colourful birds.

Day 10
We navigate also around the Iguela lagoon, with a view to meet elephants, hippos, crocodiles, monkeys, buffaloes,…

*great ape habituation program leaded by the Max Planck Institut. This extra can be proposed subject to an additional payment of EUR 500 per Person, to be paid directly to the Max Planck Institut.

Stage 5 : Libreville, the capital

Day 11
The return to the capital is by sea.

Day 12
To get a taste of Libreville, we start by strolling through Mont Bouet, the largest market in the country. The visits of craft market or the village of the famous stonemasons of Mbigou, and the magnificent sculptures of the church of Saint Michel in Nkembo, reveal the traditional Gabonese know-how.

Day 13
In the morning, you will be invited to visit the arboretum of Sibang, where experts will introduce you to the fascinating universe of tropical plants. In the afternoon, travelers will be dropped at the airport, depending on their respective flight departure time.
